Numerous and varied resources are available for Autism and Asperger Syndrome. The Center for Disease Control in Washington has affirmed (April 2007) that Autism Spectrum disorders are now at epidemic levels in the United States... 1 out of every 150 children will be affected. Research and family support funding will begin to open up. For those of us who have children in the Autism Spectrum, the epidemic news is not "News." It is of comfort that our children, their wide and varied conditions and our personal/family struggles are now going to receive a more appropriate understanding and focus. This will all take time, but focus is now shifting to education, research and public awareness. Help is hopefully on the way!
Perhaps, fewer families will face the open, varied and at times intense ridicle that has often come from lack of understanding for our children and our families. Perhaps, new information will come forth to prevent more children from being affected by this disorder -- or even a "cure" for this devastating family disorder. It is a family disorder -- a community disorder -- a disorder that affects everyone who comes into contact with our children and our families.
There is much to love in our children. There is much to hope for our children. There is much to understand and learn to accept while still reaching for answers. There is much work to be done. There can be joy in the work and daily interactions with our children.
Hopefully, resources will open up the gates of understanding and healing which will bring forth greater support and hope for our children and our families.
Here are but a few of the resources that have helped our family as we have studied and searched for hope, if not answers.
